Coordinating Minister for Human Development and culture (Coordinating Minister for PMK) Pratikno stated that he would immediately discuss the proposed elimination of the school zoning system with the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Minister of Education) Abdul Mu’ti.
“We haven’t discussed that either. I will confirm it to the Minister of Education, ” said Pratikno after a ministerial meeting at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for PMK, Jakarta, Friday.
Earlier, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka asked the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti to eliminate the school zoning system on the admission of new learners (PPDB).
This was revealed by Gibran when giving a speech at Tanwir I PP Pemuda Muhammadiyah, in Central Jakarta, Thursday.
“Yesterday at the coordination meeting with the heads of the education office, I said firmly to the Minister of Education, ‘this zoning must be eliminated’,” Gibran said.
He emphasized that education is the key to the golden generation and the Golden Indonesia 2045, therefore it is important to provide conveniences in accessing education.
Pratikno said he already knew about the proposal from the Vice President. According to him, Mendikdasmen is processing it.
“We already know this. And this is processed at the Minister of Education. We checked, ” he said.
Meanwhile, Commission X of the House of Representatives views that the abolition of the school zoning system in PPDB must consider various aspirations, ranging from the community to the government, so that its implementation really has a positive impact on education in Indonesia.
“We are of the view that we should listen to public opinion and stakeholders, by inviting stakeholders, including Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti, education agencies, teachers, parents, and education observers, to discuss the effectiveness of zoning and public complaints,” said Chairman of commission X of the House of Representatives Hetifah Sjaifudian.
According to him, the zoning system in PPDB was introduced to bring access to education closer, reduce inequality in school quality, and prevent discrimination in the world of Education.
However, he views that the system does face challenges in its implementation, such as unpreparedness of educational facilities in various regions and inequality in quality between schools
